Fire damages Palm Harbor vehicle storage facility

PALM HARBOR, FL (WFLA) -

Firefighters were on their way to another blaze when they came across the huge fire at Florida West RV and Boat storage facility in Palm Harbor.

It was fully engulfed in flames, and so were the dozens of expensive RV's, cars and boats that were kept inside. Dan and Debbie Gosche stored their 30-foot RV here.

“We just pulled in yesterday with it and now it’s gone,” said Dan Gosche.

The Gosches found out about the fire like many other property owners here.

"That was the first thing I heard when I turned on the news,” added Debbie Gosche. “And I ran and grabbed him and told him ‘the RV place is on fire’ and our worst nightmares happen now."

It didn't take long for the three-alarm fire to spread. People who live nearby reported hearing explosions as the fire intensified.

Duncan McDonald lost the RV he'd only had for a year.

He says he believes firefighters did their best, considering what they were facing.

"I don't know what they really could do,” McDonald said. “It seemed like it was a pretty intense fire with propane tanks and everything else in there I am sure it was quite dangerous I'm sure they did what they could."

The roof collapsed, which is hampering the investigation into the cause of the fire.

Fire officials have even turned to surveillance video.

"That surveillance video is of the common area and it didn't show anything,” said Palm Harbor Fire Rescue Chief Craig Maciuba. “We are waiting to investigate further when we can get some heavy equipment in here, the state Fire Marshal will help to determine."

While they wait for the owner to bring in that heavy equipment to lift the roof and get a better look at the site, other RV owners have been coming here all day.

Caroline Sharpie and her husband had just purchased their 2014 RV, and had only take two trips in it. They say all owners are required to have their own insurance and the facility is not responsible for theft or damage.

“When you spend that much on something like that you have to get insurance, you do, that’s my only advice, put insurance on it,” Sharpie added.

While investigators try to pinpoint the cause of the fire, the damage to the RVs, boats, cars and the facility could run into the millions of dollars.
