Free savings seminar for seniors Friday in Hillsborough

Posted: Updated:
Senior citizens who want to make the most of their fixed incomes can get helpful safety tips at a free special event this Friday.

The Super Seniors Savings Seminar will be at Hillsborough Community College's Dale Mabry Campus, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The information sessions include tips on saving money, medicare, life long learning, and avoiding scams and fraud. It's sponsored by HCC and the Elder Rights Task Force. News Channel 8's Yolanda Fernandez will open the program.

People over 60 are the fastest-growing segment of the population in the United States.  In Hillsborough County, more than 207,000 people are in that age group.

Many seniors retire in Florida for the sunshine and end up living far away from children and relatives.  This makes them more at risk for financial exploitation.  A recent survey found 20 percent of Americans over 65 admit to falling victim to money swindles.

Tampa Police want people to be aware of a new scam targeting seniors in the area that involves fake red-light tickets.

91-year-old Dovie Carter said a man called her on the phone and said she ran a red light in October. "If I didn't pay this money this day I was going to jail. I said I haven't got $600, I can't do that," said Carter.  The man agreed to take $350 and gave her specific instructions for buying a money card and calling him with the code.

Tampa police are investigating.

"In the red light situation, they actually get bullied.  The criminal gets them to believe they did something wrong and owe money," said Captain Mary O'Connor, Tampa Police Department.

Friday's seminar will have the experts on hand to help seniors learn how to avoid becoming targets and avoid elder abuse.

It sounds like a wild fabrication: A spitting cobra, being prepared for a dish in a restaurant in southern China, bit and killed a chef 20 minutes after its head had been chopped off.

The may look fluffy and cute, but these caterpillars are anything but. Under all that fur on the puss caterpillar are venomous bristles that break off into the skin when touched by humans and cause serious pain.
