Columbia County officials say illegal dumping is becoming a problem as crews pick up debris from February's ice storm.
Columbia County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) director Pam Tucker says all of the main roadways and most of the right-of-ways in Columbia County have been cleared of ice storm damaged debris.
Tucker says some residents are continuing to dump debris along the roadways and even on private roads. She says this is becoming a problem as crews work to complete the recovery effort from the ice storm as soon as possible.
Officials warn, illegal dumping is a violation of both county ordinances and state laws – and is punishable by severe fines and penalties.
Anyone who sees what is clearly illegal dumping along any Columbia County right-of-way is asked to note the time, date, location, tag number of the vehicle, description of the vehicle, and description of persons dumping. Then they are asked to contact the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office's non-emergency number at 706-541-2800.
Officials urge residents to not confront anyone yourself.
