Augusta, GA -
Will more department heads need the Augusta Commission's help with their budgets?
Tuesday, we told you Commissioners voted to exempt the Richmond County Sheriff's Office from the mandatory 2.4 percent budget cut required for all departments.
Richmond County Marshall Steve Smith says the cut impacts part-time security officers, but doesn't plan to ask to be exempt. However, if he runs out of money by the end of the year, he may need to ask for help.
"When we get down to the last quarter, we'll really start looking at the situation and seeing where we are and seeing what we have to do to try and live within those constraints," says Smith. "Do you think you might have to go back again," we asked Smith. "It just depends on what happens between now and then," said Smith.
The Sheriff's Office exemption put the city budget nearly $900,000 out of balance.
City leaders are considering a work session to determine how to fill the hole.
