There's now a nearly $900,000 hole in Augusta's budget.
Tuesday, Augusta Commissioners approved exempting the Richmond County Sheriff's Office from a mandatory 2.4 percent budget cut.
Sheriff Richard Roundtree told city leaders the cut would have taken officers off the street.
Commissioners did not say how the money will be made up, but directed Augusta Finance Department officials to take the $900,000 from the General Fund.
