Augusta, GA -
The voters of Crimea have cast their lot with Russia. Initial results show more than 95-percent of voters approve of splitting the Black Sea Peninsula from Ukraine and joining Russia. Alex Marquardt with an update.
The result was never in doubt. But now it is official - an overwhelming number of Crimeans voting to reject their Ukrainian citizenships and to become Russians. There is celebration in the streets of Crimea tonight. The vote an affirmation of what most Crimeans say they feel, that they are Russian and want to be a part of Russia. Voters streamed into polling stations across Crimea. Most who oppose the vote were boycotting and stayed home. The official results are impossible to verify. There were no internationally recognized monitors here on the ground to certify the vote. But it is a rubber stamp for Russia, whose forces have already taken over Crimea, and now its Parliament is expected to soon make the annexation official.
The White House has already rejected the referendum, saying it won't recognize its result. The U.S. and Europe in the coming days are expected to impose sanctions on Russian officials, but so far no sign President Putin is backing down.
