FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

North Carolina investigators are opening a probe into allegations that Fayetteville's police chief had an assistant take a certification exam in his place.

The Fayetteville Observer reports the state Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission will look into the case. All certified police officers are required to take the annual exam, which can be taken online.

Fayetteville City Manager Ted Voorhees said Thursday an internal police department review cleared Police Chief Harold Medlock. Voorhees said Friday he knew that the state commission would review the local investigation and make an independent decision about that to do next.

Medlock referred questions to Voorhees.

Medlock took over Fayetteville's police force last year after rising from patrol officer to Charlotte-Mecklenburg deputy police chief.
