Restaurant Ratings: Most Violations March 3-7

Posted: Updated:

Ever wonder what goes on in the kitchen of your favorite restaurants? We’ve gathered details about the Tampa Bay restaurants that received the most violations during inspections conducted from March 3-7, 2014.

Each restaurant is shown in the slideshow above. The total number of violations the restaurant received is shown in the plate on the left side of the slide. Some details from the inspection report are listed below the slide.

While researching this article we found that one restaurant received violations so serious, the restaurant was closed. On March 5, inspectors temporarily closed the Parthenon Cafe at 9393 Florida Ave. so the staff could fix the violations. The restaurant received a total of 35 violations.

Inspectors discovered the restaurant had some problems with rodents. Inspectors found nine dead rodents. One was found dead under a cooler. A rodent was found decaying under a freezer. One dead rodent was found behind a cooler. One decaying rodent was found on a sticky pad (a rodent catching device). A decaying rodent and a fully decayed rodent were found under a cooler on the cook's line. One rodent was found under a cooler on the cook's line. Two dead rodents were found on a sticky pad under another cooler.

Inspectors mentioned that they found a total of 110 rodent droppings at various locations in the kitchen and they also saw rodent gnaw marks along the walls and ceilings.

The restaurant also received a violation because inspectors observed ants on a prep table.

The Parthenon Cafe also had some problems when it came to storing food at safe temperatures. Inspectors say American cheese and potatoes were being held at temperatures greater than 41 degrees. Eggs were being stored at room temperature greater than 45 degrees. Eggs were also found stored with cracks or broken shells.

The restaurant's license was also expired.

On March 6, inspectors returned to the Parthenon Cafe and found fewer violations. Of the 19 total violations, none were for rodents, ants, or food being held at improper temperatures. Most of the violations were classified as "basic" and involved the improper storage of supplies.

Inspectors from Florida's Department of Business and Professional Regulation conducted the inspections. The department cited violations of Florida's sanitation and safety laws, which are based on the standards of U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Food Code.

While most establishments correct all violations in a timely manner (often during the inspection), the division's procedures are designed to compel compliance with all violations through follow-up visits, administration action or closure when necessary, according to the Florida DBPR website.
