Maine firefighter adopts dog he rescued

Posted: Updated:

A volunteer firefighter has adopted a six-month-old black Labrador retriever puppy he rescued from a fire.

Jacob Gardner, of Turner, ME, says all he saw at first was that there were flames shooting out of a barn, and then he realized the building on fire was Varney's Farm.

"Everybody knows their dogs," said Gardner.

The buildings at Varney's once housed seven litters of puppies and a number of adult dogs. Of the 33 animals in the building, all but four made it out.

One of the survivors was a six-month-old black lab that Gardner found cowering in the smoke-filled structure.

"I went in the back door and started looking around, looked over and happened to see her hiding under a bunch of stuff," Gardner said. "And, uh, she wouldn't move, so I had to go in and get her."

"She had definitely had a little smoke," Gardner added.

The puppy was rushed to a clinic and is expected to make a full recovery. When she was released, Gardner offered to pick her up.

He says she ran to him, climbed onto his lap, licked his face, and he knew he had to adopt her.

"If I wouldn't have found her she'd have still been in there this morning, so there's a reason I went in after her, and I'm glad that I found her, and I'm not letting her go," said Gardner.

The puppy's new name: Smokey.
