CARY, N.C. -

Explosive growth in western Wake County means schools are bursting with students.  Parents in one Cary community say the situation has gotten so bad, they're worried about the safety of their kids.

Parents and students at Highcroft Elementary School in Cary protested outside Wake County School Board headquarters on Tuesday.

Protesters say they are upset about overcrowding at the school, and county plans, they believe, could make the situation worse.

On Tuesday, the board voted to continue enrollment caps at a number of overcrowded schools.  Highcroft parents took issue with original plans to continue designating their school as overflow for Mills Park Elementary, even at 114 percent capacity.  The board made a last minute change, removing Highcroft as overflow and instead designating Turner Creek Elementary.

"The classrooms are crowded, the bathroom facilities are crowded, and then you have all these children you want to put outside ... it's not safe," Amy Hugo said.  "It's not a safe environment for them.  You know, whether-related, tornado warnings, where do they go? Who protects the children?"

The last minute change is not easing parents' concerns about the potential for new modular classrooms at Highcroft.

New neighborhoods are under construction in the area.  School board member Susan Evans, who represents Highcroft, suggested the school system look into having families who move to those new neighborhoods go to a different school, but no decision has been made yet.
