In this Black History Moment, we are putting the spotlight on Augusta native, Grammy Award Winning Opera Singer Jessye Norman. Norman was born in Augusta, GA in 1945. Norman attended C.T. Walker, A.R. Johnson, and Lucy C. Laney High School.
Norman credits opera singers like Marian Anderson as inspirational figures. Norman moved to Europe in 1969, where she performed in many countries including Germany and Italy. She made her U-S debut in opera in 1982 with the Opera Company of Philadelphia.
Norman was inducted into the Georgia Hall of Fame in 1999, and she received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. She has received honorary doctorates from more than 30 colleges, universities, and conservatories including the Manhattan School of Music and Northwestern University.
