South Carolina Senate Approves Letting School Districts Excuse Snow Days

Posted: Updated:
Columbia, SC -

The South Carolina Senate has approved a bill allowing school boards to forgive up to five days of classes canceled during this winter's back-to-back snow and ice storms.

The measure approved unanimously Wednesday would waive state law requiring schools to make up all days missed due to extreme weather. Before excusing any, schools must first use up their scheduled makeup days, if any are left in their remaining school year.

By law, districts are supposed to build three makeup days into their calendar in case they're needed.

The South Carolina House of Representatives passed its version 95-0 on February 6th, after the first round of wintry weather. The Senate intended to take it up the next week when a second and a harsher storm struck.

The amended bill returns to the House.
