LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) -  A spider bite turned deadly for a Lakeland man who died after spending more than six months suffering in pain.

Bill Reese said his son Ron, 62, was both good with his hands and his heart.

“He wouldn't charge them, that was the kind of person he was,” Bill Reese said of his son who worked as a home repairman.

But, a bite on the back of the neck by a brown recluse spider at one of those jobs eventually claimed his life.

“I saw him take his last breath. I thank the lord for it,” Reese said.

Reese is praising because his son's pain finally came to an end February 16th.

The Polk County Medical Examiner ruled that Ron Reese died from complication of cervical epidural abscess due to spider envenomation. Simply put, Bill Reese says that bite caused his son six months of excruciating pain he could not escape.

He was in moaning and groaning the whole time he was in the hospital. The doctors would give him something that would last an hour, sometimes two hours, then it would come right back,” he said.

Brown recluse spiders are typically found in dry and dark places.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration warns workers about the spider, saying bites typically yield symptoms like nausea, joint pain and weakness.

“He went down in the floor and was paralyzed ever since,” Reese said of his son's symptoms which occurred a couple days after the bite.

Bill Reese says there's no doubt his son endured the worst. While he's relieved his son can't feel the pain any more, he misses him every day.

“But I know he's at peace now,” Reese said.
