Aiken, S.C. -
The Annual Aiken Community Blood Drive takes place Thursday morning at Odell Weeks Recreation Center and Newschannel 6 is a proud sponsor of the event.
While the need for blood is constant, the recent weather makes Thursday's event crucial for the Shepeard Blood Center.
Blood centers face a challenge every winter – it’s one of the hardest times of the year to collect donations. Unfortunately, the cold season is also often the time when need for blood is the highest.
The Shepherd Blood Center supplies blood for 20 local hospitals and the regional blood center.
They tell us the storm, combined with blood’s short shelf life, really impacted resources – making today’s blood drive incredibly important.
"We lost 3 consecutive days of collection," said Greg Bearden, Director of Community Resources at Shepeard Community Blood Center. "We were not able to collect any blood for those days that the ice and snow were on the ground."
