Cary reopens renovated downtown movie theater

Posted: Updated:
CARY, N.C. -

Cary reopened a renovated downtown movie theater Saturday with an offering of free movies and entertainment.

"To create something new out of something old and to bring the past into the future is something pretty special," said Cary Mayor Harold Weinbrecht.

The Cary was built in 1946  as a show place for films and live entertainment. Even Patsy Kline performed at the theater.

The building itself has served as many different businesses over the years, from a drug store to clothing store to an auto parts store. Renovations on the theater began 14 months ago.

"To be honest with you, I don't remember very much at all about this building. It was almost like just part of the scenery as you drive by," said Cary resident of 30 years Pat King.

Weinbrecht hopes The Cary will be a focal point of a new downtown.

"This will be a new destination point. There will be a reason for people to come downtown, a reason for businesses to locate downtown," he said.

The theater will host a wide range of movies and performances using "Waking Sleeping Beauty" as its first film in decades.

A jazz band will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and "Casablanca" will be on the silver screen Sunday at 2 p.m.
