Sick Cary child 'stable,' but will have further tests

Posted: Updated:
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

A Cary child who suddenly became sick earlier this month with H1N1 is "stable," his parents say on a Facebook page, but may be dealing with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency.

Deklan Galvanek, an 8-month-old child from Cary, has been fighting for his life ever since he got sick. Tests show Deklan has H1N1, but his father said further tests were being done to determine if Deklan has Severe Combined Immunodeficiency.

SCID can prevent the body from fighting off an infection such as H1N1.

"Doctors seem to think that his lymphocyte levels are indicating that he has something called Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID). This means that his little body is not equipped with the cells it needs to fight off all of these nasty infections. We should have a better idea and a more clear plan on Monday," Deklan's parents wrote in an update.

According to the North Carolina DHHS, from Oct. 5, 2013 to Feb. 8, 2014, there have been 165 confirmed cases of H1N1 in the state.

A Facebook page updating his condition, "Bring Deklan Home," said, "What a roller coaster ride this has been. Right now, Deklan is doing great. Stable. Slowly working his way off of the ventilator and starting to breathe on his own.

His parents, Evan and Jenna Galvanek, said Deklan was the picture of health until last Monday. At first they thought he had symptoms of the common cold but within 24 hours it was clear it was something more serious.

"Suddenly we started noticing a change in his color. His face was a little bit white, his lips were blue, and most noticeable was his rapid breathing" said Evan Galvanek.

Little over a week later test results showed that Deklan tested positive for H1N1, but Friday his father said further tests were being done to determine if Deklan has H1N1 for sure.

The family is overwhelmed with the medical expenses as a result of Deklan's hospital stay. To find out how you can help go to a website setup to help.
