Nearly 900 Airmen at MacDill Air Force Base have been notified they may lose their jobs as part of a "non-voluntary force management program."

2nd Lt. Patrick Gargan is in the public affairs office of the 6th Air Mobility wing. He says, "Active duty force management programs are coupled with strategic personnel policies designed to manage and shape the force to ensure mission readiness while drawing down the force to meet mandated end-strength. As we become smaller, it is important to remember our Airmen are and will continue to be our top priority."

The cuts are part of a reduction across the Air Force.

Retired Air Force General David "Tanker" Snyder was once the commander of the 6th Air Mobility Wing at MacDill.

General Snyder says the reduction will have a huge impact on the base.

"Force structure balancing is a continuing challenge because you look out ten, twenty years for a person's career," said Snyder.

General Snyder says a reduction in force after conflicts end has been going on ever since there has been a military.

Snyder says some of the reduction is the result of the end of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, but he says these cuts are also occurring because of sequestration.

"I think this time it's because of the drastic meat cleaver approach that sequestration forces on that," said Snyder.

The Air Force plans to cut up to 25,000 positions over the next five years.

Snyder says the cuts will impact the lives of service members who have given more than ten years of their lives to the country.

"They're the people that came in and put their hands up after 911 and we needed a lot of security forces and we needed a lot of armament folks,"said Snyder.
