AUGUSTA, GA (WJBF) - The state wrestling tournament gets underway in Atlanta this weekend and plenty of local athletes will compete for a state title, including a pair of wrestlers at Cross Creek who share a school.. and a last name.
Twin sophomores Pierre and Brandon Dowling have each piled up over 50 wins this season and finished 4th in their respective weight class at last weekend's 4A Eastern Sectionals.
Not bad when you consider that neither brother had even considered attempting wrestling, until a chance encounter in the hallway during their freshman year with their now head coach.
"I was standing by my door and I saw this little athletic looking student walk by," second year Cross Creek coach Nelson Patton said. "I asked him what his name was and he said 'Pierre Dowling', then I asked him how much he weighed he said '106 pounds'. And I knew I had to get these guys to wrestle."
"He ended up coming into my class one day," said the 113-pound Pierre. "And he told me congratulations and that I'd just made the wrestling team. And everybody started clapping."
Pierre then recruited his twin brother Brandon.
"Pierre said it was kinda fun," Brandon said."So we went out there and started wrestling, and we got really competitive and we started to like it."
The Dowlings aren't the only pair of siblings in the CSRA head to the state tournament, Burke County's Nick and George Tomlin qualified at sectionals as well.
