Some blood drives this week have canceled due to the icy road conditions and closure of area schools. The continuation of poor weather continues to compromise the local blood supply.
As a precaution, some area schools have already announced closure for this Wednesday; which cancels blood drives scheduled and eliminates the opportunity for blood donations needed to reach the 144 donations necessary every day to supply our hospitals.
"The cold/flu season, the circulating stomach bug and the probability of another winter storm continues to reduce the number of blood donors at centers and blood mobiles," says Kevin Belanger, President/CEO of Shepeard Community Blood Center.
Please donate if you are feeling healthy and well, weigh at least 110 pounds, are 17-years-old or older, or 16-years-old with a signed parental consent form.
Blood center officials ask that you eat a full meal, hydrate well, and bring a picture ID with you to donate at one of the Shepeard Blood Centers or on a Blood Mobile near you, Monday or Tuesday of this week. All blood types are needed.
Shepeard Community Blood Center, the only contracted local blood provider for 20 area hospitals from Barnwell, South Carolina to Baxley, Georgia needs blood donors today to help meet the needs of our area's most fragile patients.
There are 3 donation centers conveniently located in the area:
