WJBF News Channel 6 has learned more information concerning Sunday night's high speed chase from North Augusta into Edgefield County which resulted in the death of the driver being pursued.

A North Augusta Department of Public Safety (NADPS) spokesman tells us, around 7:30 Sunday night, Officer Justin Craven attempted to make a traffic stop on Knox Avenue in front of the Shoppes of North Augusta because of suspected DUI.

Officer Craven reportedly initiated the stop, but the driver accelerated and failed to pull over.  The vehicle pursuit traveled north on Highway 25 toward Edgefield County. The suspect vehicle's actions destroyed personal property and contributed to two separate accidents along Highway 25 during the pursuit. NADPS officers alerted the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office of the pursuit headed their way.

Simultaneous to Edgefield County's arrival, the pursuit ended at a residence on Rose Road off Highway 25. Law enforcement approached the suspect vehicle and an altercation ensued and shots were fired. During the confrontation, Officer Craven shot 68-year old Earnest Satterwhite, Sr. EMS was called to the scene and immediately transported Satterwhite to Georgia Regents Medical Center in Augusta.

There were no other passengers in Satterwhite's vehicle during the pursuit. The residence where the pursuit ended was later learned to belong to Satterwhite.

Following standard operating policies and procedures at NADPS with any officer involved shootings, the investigation has been turned over to the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED).

NADPS is reportedly cooperating fully with SLED's investigation, but at this time has no further comment about the incident.
