There is an urgent need for O Negative blood right now and Shepeard Blood Center is putting out the call for donors.
The urgent need for O Negative blood is the result of increased patient use in our 20 contracted hospitals, according to Shepeard Blood Center officials. Specifically, they say, a few critically ill patients in the Joseph M. Still Burn Center are in need of blood.
Patients in CSRA hospitals are waiting for blood, the officials say. Many cancer and surgical patients are awaiting life-saving procedures until the urgent need for blood is met. Shepeard needs 144 donors every day to meet the needs of patients in our hospitals.
If you are feeling healthy and well, weigh at least 110 pounds and are 17 years of age or older, we ask that you eat a full meal, hydrate well and bring a picture ID with you to donate at one of our Shepeard Blood Centers or a Blood Mobile near you.
Shepeard Community Blood Center is the only contracted local blood provider for 20 area hospitals from Barnwell, South Carolina to Baxley, Georgia. They need blood donors today to help meet the needs of our area's most fragile patients. Locally, there is less than a 1 day supply of type "O negative" blood and less than a 3 day supply of type "A positive" blood on the shelves. The blood must be donated, processed and on the shelf before it is needed. All blood types are needed.
There are 3 donation centers conveniently located in the area. For a center or bloodmobile near you, log on to Shepeardblood.org. Appointments are available but not necessary. For more information contact Pamela Rascon at 706-833-9086 or Greg Bearden at 706-833-8314.
