Today was the grand opening of Christ Central's Hope Center in Graniteville.
The 15,000 square-foot building was deemed useless after the 2005 train derailment. It is now being used to better educate children and help unemployed adults reach self sufficiency.
Today, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, local leaders and other community members were all on hand for the opening.
Gov. Haley is enthusiastic about the center.
"It is going to lift people up with opportunities that they deserve to have. And more than that, if you look at the number of volunteers ready to step up and help their neighbors, ready to step up in a time where we're going to give them training and nursing, give them their GED's, make sure they go and they have any opportunity to work."
The mission of the Hope Center is to be a place where neighbors can help neighbors break the cycle of poverty.
