PITTSBORO, N.C. -

A 3-month-old puppy is recovering at the Chatham Animal Rescue and Education facility in Pittsboro after being attacked by someone using a knife during a domestic dispute, according to a web page raising money for its recovery.

The terrier mix breed puppy, Bella, was attacked and her legs were injured, according to a GoFundMe page called Help Bella heal and find a home.

Updates on the website indicate that Chatham County Animal Control was able to rescue Bella and take her to the Veterinary Specialty Hospital of the Carolinas in Cary.

Dr. Elaine Holmes performed surgery and was able to save Bella's legs.

"It broke my heart to see her sitting there," Dr. Holmes said. "She was so sweet and even with as much pain as she was in and just such a bad state when she first came in, she's still the sweetest, nicest little girl."

Dr. Holmes said it may take up for a month to determine if Bella will make a full recovery.

The Chatham County Sheriff's Office said Niahmetrius Williams, 23, of Old Lystra Road in Chapel Hill, had been arrested for cruelty to animals, assault on a female, simple assault on an officer and communicating threats.

The sheriff said the incident happened Jan. 8 at 1:31 a.m. Officials say Williams hit his girlfriend in the face and assaulted her dog by trying to cut off its leg.

Chatham Animal Rescue and Education has placed Bella with a foster family who is making sure she gets the medical attention she needs and the love she deserves until she can find a forever home.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay some of Bella's medical bills.

The goal is to raise $6,600, and so far a little more than $5,000 has been raised to help pay for Bella's medical expenses.
