AUGUSTA, Ga. – GRU Augusta sophomore Hunter Boose ripped a double down the left-field line in the bottom of the ninth to score two Jaguars for a 3-2 walk-off victory over Carson-Newman Sunday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
Recent Jaguar signee Frank Warren started the third game against the Eagles. The freshman had a no-hitter going through four innings with six strikeouts before C-N’s Evan Jurjevic broke it up with a single up the middle. Jurjevic took second on a sac bunt and Peter Rajkovich hit an RBI single for a 1-0 lead.
C-N’s Shade Jett got a blooper to fall in shallow left field to score Cody Fox. GRU went to freshman Tristan Jones in the bullpen who escaped the inning with a double-play groundball. Jones relieved Warren who tossed 6.1 innings, striking out eight and allowing four hits for two runs. After a double off the left-field wall from C-N’s Evan Kirkpatrick, the Jags brought in senior slinger Clint Echols who got a groundball for the third out. Jags freshman Tyler Roberts hit a one-out single to center field and the Jags put runners on first and third with a Jeff Rice single to left field.
Carson-Newman went to Josh Russell from the bullpen and GRU’s Connor Gilbert introduced him to the game with an RBI-single to cut it to 2-1. With Gilbert on first and Rice on Second, Boose took a pitch inside and lined a shot into the left field corner. Rice was a sure score to even the game, but Gilbert capitalized on a bobbled ball by the left fielder to score from first and give the Jags their first win as Georgia Regents University.
Gilbert went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, while Bradley Dennis was 2-for-3 and Boose and Ryan Khan 1-for-3 with Boose adding two RBI. For the Eagles, Jett and Rajkovich each went 1-for-3 while with an RBI while Kirkpatrick, Fox, and Jurjecvic each had a hit.
Echols got the win in 1.1 innings of work, getting one strikeout and allowing no hits in four batters faced. Russell took the Eagles loss, allowing two hits for one run. The Jags play a non-conference series for their first road test of 2014 at West Georgia on Feb. 8-9 in Carrolton, Ga., for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
