AIKEN, S.C. – The Jaguars hit 90 points for the third straight game and the sixth time this season to give Peach-Belt leading USC Aiken its first home loss of the year with a 97-84 blowout victory Saturday night in the Convocation Center.
With over 2,000 fans showing out to Aiken, GRU Augusta (17-3, 10-1) upset the Pacers (18-3, 10-1) with the Sherrill Brothers taking over for the Jaguars. Freshman Keshun Sherrill led the team with a career-high 21 points (9-of-12 free throws) with three rebounds and an assist, while Senior KJ Sherrill scored 20 for his seventh consecutive double-figure night (14 overall) and added four boards and three assists.
In the first half the Jaguars shot 51.7 percent from the field and 81.2 percent from the charity stripe (13-of-16) to go into the break with a 44-42 advantage. Harold Doby and Ronell Crockett led the Jags with eight points in the first half, while USCA’s Ronald Zimmerman and Paul Larsen each reached double figures with 10 points apiece.
GRU’s D’Angelo Boyce hit a deep three pointer to beat the halftime buzzer for the Jags’ only three pointer of the game. The team posted their worst performance this season from the beyond the arc – shooting 12.5 percent to match their 12.5 night in the 72-70 overtime loss at Benedict on Nov. 26.
KJ Sherrill and Doby made buckets to open the second, but a Devontae Wright three ball ended the Jags’ run. Two Jesse Seilern free throws brought the Pacers within one, but Crockett nailed a jumper to keep the Jags ahead 57-54 at the 13:25 mark. Crockett followed with another basket and a free throw to push GRU’s advantage to 62-56.
Up 10 with 10 minutes to go, Keshun Sherrill nailed an 18 footer from KJ Sherrill to ignite the visiting Jaguar fans. GRU went up by as much 19 to knock off the Pacers. Senior Harold Doby held down the Jaguar defense with three steals and two blocks. He complimented it with 11 points for his second consecutive double-figure performance. Ronell Crockett came off the GRU bench to give Augusta 17 points and seven rebounds.
Zimmerman led all scorers with 24 Pacer points, while Paul Larsen nabbed a double-double (16pts 11reb).
The Jags play a PBC game at Clayton State on Wednesday, Feb. 5 for a 7:30 p.m. start in Atlanta, Ga., and host USC Aiken in Christenberry Fieldhouse on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
