AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Paine College men’s basketball team defeated Morehouse College 72-63 on Jan. 27 at the HEAL Complex. With the win, Paine improves to 9-9 on the season and 5-4 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). The Maroon Tigers fall to 5-12 overall and 2-7 in the SIAC.
The Purple and White gained the lead five minutes into the game and did not let it go. At the half, Paine led 37-28. In the last half of regulation, the Maroon Tigers edged to within two points of the lead multiple times. The Lions kept their turnovers to one of their lowest amounts of the season, 10. Morehouse had 15 turnovers on the game. Paine turned those 15 turnovers into 16 Purple and White points. On the other hand, Morehouse scored nine points from Paine turnovers.
Seniors Kenny Fluellen and Toby Veal each scored 18 points in the win. Veal added a game high eight rebounds for the Lions, although Morehouse outrebounded Paine 33-29, and two blocks. Fluellen contributed another block for Paine and shot 57 percent from behind the arc making 4-of-7. Kedric Taylor scored 13 points and had four assists and two rebounds.
Paine shot 53 percent from the field, 35 percent from behind the arc and 71 percent from the free throw line. The Maroon Tigers shot 42 percent from the field, 23 percent from behind the arc and 91 percent from the line. Morehouse only missed one free throw during the game. They were led by Darrius Williams and Joshua Simmons who both had 16 points.
The Lions take on Claflin in Orangeburg, S.C. on Jan. 30. The Lady Lions will play at 5:30 p.m. with the men’s game to follow.
