Saturday, February 22nd, 2014 will be an important day for the Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church family. The church will host the third annual Reid on the Run to benefit University Hospital's Breast Health Center and Reid Memorial's Children Ministry.
This year's run is honoring church member Sterling Ivey, a wife and mother of 3 who is battling cancer for the second time.
Joy Weigle, Director of Christian Education at Reid Memorial, describes Sterling as an incredible person.
"Sterling is such a positive and inspiring woman. Two years ago, she served as the chairperson for our first run which raised almost $12,000 for a charity called Press On to help aid in research for pediatric cancers. At last year's run, she raised close to $11,000 for the Augusta Warrior Project."
Sterling was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 at the age of 36. She endured chemotherapy and radiation after a double mastectomy, and got a clean bill of health. Last year, however, she received the devastating news that the cancer had returned. This time, in her bones and tissue.
It's a journey Sterling says she never thought she would face again.
"Because the cancer has returned, it is considered Stage 4, no matter the size or the site of return. This cancer is the same cancer I had in 2007. It has now moved to other places- spine, pelvis, bones... too many places to count. I also have a very small mass in the soft tissue next to my sternum."
The cancer is treatable but not curable; the goal is to get the tumors to dormancy.
"At times, it seems this is a very lonely road even when I know I have so many friends and family out there praying and helping. This is the most important fight of my life. I am ready for it and plan to take it head on."
