MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – GRU Augusta gave up a basket with 00.3 seconds to Georgia College to fall 56-55 to the Bobcats Monday night for the Jaguars’ first Peach Belt Conference loss of the year.

GRU (14-3, 7-1) held a one-point lead with under a second to go when the Bobcats (7-8, 3-5) inbounded the ball under their own rim. Royal Thomas grabbed the pass midair and made the shot for a controversial finish with the clock winding down.

In the first with under 15 minutes to go, both teams answered one another for an 8-all game. A Keshun Sherrill three ball from the top of the key sparked the offense for GRU Augusta. Harold Doby, in his second game back from injury, scored a spin-around layup and dealt an assist to D’Angelo Boyce for a three pointer to go up 18-10.

Ryan Blumenthal shined for GC in the first half, netting the game at 22-all with a layup and hitting consecutive treys to reverse the advantage to the Bobcats at 26-22. After some Jaguar free throws, Devonte Thomas stole an inbound pass and found Devon Wright-Nelson for a fast-break score in the paint to steal a 27-26 halftime score. Eight Jags scored in the first half of play, but it was KJ Sherrill’s seven points and five rebounds that highlighted GRU Augusta.

Ryan Weems elevated in the corner for a deep trey to open the second half and push the Jags’ advantage to 32-26. The Jaguars stayed ahead into the first media timeout to hold on to a 35-32 lead. Kelvin Nwanze hit a trey and Blumenthal got to the line for the Bobcats to tie the game. GRU’s Devonte Thomas, coming off a season-high performance on Saturday night, stayed hot with a made three pointer to keep his squad ahead on the road.

Royal Thomas went off midway through the second, banking in a three from the top of the key and getting a layup to fall in transition. The Jags turned the ball over twice in row, but stopped the Bobcats and kept a 49-46 lead after two KJ Sherrill free throws. Thomas made another clutch trey for the Jaguars, but Larrentis Thomas recorded a three-point play to keep GC close behind at 52-49. Blumenthal came off the bench late to get fouled and make the basket and the free throw to tie the game at 52-all with 3:00 minutes remaining.

The Jags missed three free throws and committed two turnovers in the closing two minutes to give the ball to GC where they knocked off GRU with the buzzer beater. KJ Sherrill paced GRU with 13 points and 12 boards and Thomas notched 10 points. Blumenthal scored 13 for the Bobcats and Larrentis and Royal added 12 and 11.

The Jags play at UNC Pembroke on Saturday, Jan. 25 for a PBC matchup at 3:30 p.m.
