MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – GRU Augusta dropped a 78-59 Peach Belt Conference contest Monday night to Georgia College in the Centennial Center.
The Bobcats (12-3, 5-3) held the advantage on their home floor for entire first half, with Shanteona Keys leading the way with 15 points and Enisha Donley 12. GRU seniors J’ Ashby and Becky Newhouse each posted nine points with Newhouse grabbing four rebounds.
Jags (8-7, 4-4) freshman Tavia Sykes nailed a trey to beat the halftime buzzer to trail the Bobcats 37-34 at the break. Out of the whistle Ashby hit two free throws and kept it close as the Jags stayed within five for the opening six minutes of the second meeting.
Newhouse kissed the glass at the 13:28 mark to bring it within two, but Keys hit two threes from the corner in transition to keep GC on top 55-47. Lonna Turner made two at the charity stripe for GRU, but Keys sunk another deep shot from the same spot and Donley followed to push the GC lead to 69-57. Eventually down by 10 with 3:30 left, Ashby rimmed out two jumpers resulting in consecutive fast-break layups from Donley.
With just over two minutes and trailing 76-59, Jaguar head coach Nate Teymer inserted five bench players while the clock expired. The Bobcats won 78-59 with Keys scoring a career-high 33 points, while Donley notched 22.
GRU was led by Ashby’s 15, while Newhouse dropped 12 points and grabbed nine boards. GC outshot the Jags 46.8 percent to 34.5 percent from the field and owned a 50.0 percent three-point percentage to GRU’s 25.0
The Jaguars play at UNC Pembroke on Saturday, Jan. 25 for a PBC matchup at 1:30 p.m.
