Schawrtz wrote the music and lyrics for Godspell in 1971 and won several awards, including two Grammys.
He offers these thoughts about Godspell productions:
"Every time Godspell is done, it is basically created anew, because it grows out of the improvisations of the cast and the directorial concept. The content of it didn't spring up anew 40 years ago. The content has been around for 2000 years, and the stories and lessons and philosophy have remained relevant for all that time.... Godspell, at its heart, is about the formation together over very basic and simple philosophical concepts, such as "Always treat others as you would have them treat you." That being said, Godspell is never intended to be preachy or to be a 'Sunday School lesson.' It's funny and joyous."
