RALEIGH, N.C. -

A Raleigh artist was killed when the top of a tree fell on her during Saturday afternoon's storms.

Raleigh Police say 50-year-old Cheryl Harrison was walking on Abbotts Creek Trail near Dunn Road with her husand and son around 2:30 p.m. when high winds caused the top portion of a tree to break and fall.

Harrison was transported to WakeMed by EMS and was subsequently pronounced deceased as a result of her injuries. Neither of the men sustained serious injuries.

A local artist, Harrison was described by friends as a loving, warm person who loved being outdoors.

Wind gusts topped out at 86 miles per hour at RDU International Saturday, which breaks the old record of 79 miles per hour set in September 2004. The storms knocked out power to as many as 40,000 customers, Duke Energy reported, and a condominium complex under construction in the Brier Creek toppled in the wind.

The Red Cross also assisted with those who live in two separate mobile home parks that were damaged during the storm. One of the mobile home parks is located on Dove Lane in Raleigh and the other on Reed Street in Cary.

No one in those mobile homes was hurt.
