WJBF News Channel 6 was the only station there when 2 Augusta commissioners met with a developer to talk about building an outlet mall in the Garden City.
Investigative Reporter Mike Miller was there and told commissioners, "we have a source that tells us you guys are meeting with a representative for an outlet mall." Joe Jackson replied, "that is correct. But he has asked us to keep a couple of things in confidence, so we respect his request. He's looking by this time next year of having something available in the Augusta area."
We have confirmed that the developer is Ben Carter Enterprises. The Atlanta-based company has built several shopping centers and currently, it's building an outlet mall in Savannah. Jackson says right now, the developer has his eye on a location near the Costco and the new Cabela's.
"That was a spot that he is looking at yes, but right now we're just going through the procedure. He's meeting with the CVB, the Chamber, and Walter Sprouse, the Development Authority," Jackson said.
A movie theater will be located across the street from Comcast and there are plans for a hotel across the street from Costco. There is plenty of space available for retail in that location as well. Jackson says the outlet mall isn't set in stone, but says officials are working to make it happen.
"He said he's not going to commit until he feels comfortable that everything will work out for both sides," Jackson said.
An announcement is expected before the end of the month.
