With a new year comes a new scam.
The Richmond County Sheriffs Office warns that scammers are targeting bar and restaurant owners. Several local businesses with state liquor licenses have received calls starting late this week claiming that their liquor permit fees have not cleared for 2014 and that the businesses would be shut down in a matter of hours unless they immediately paid by credit card over the phone.
The callers claimed to work with official agencies like the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms (ATF), and the Georgia Department of Revenue.
But Lt. Lewis Blachard said the callers are actually scammers trying to illegally obtain credit card information; Blanchard said that none of these agencies would make phone calls to collect fees.
Officers recommend if you receive a call like this to ask the name of the officer and to tell them you will call them back at the official agency website. The Richmond County Sheriff's Office can be reached at 706-821-1080.
