Harlem To Refund Some Speeding Ticket Payments

Posted: Updated:
Harlem, GA -

The Harlem Department of Public Safety has discovered their speed detection device calibration certificate expired this past February.

Law enforcement departments are required, by law, to submit an annual radar calibration report to the Georgia Department of Public Safety in order to maintain and use radar detection devices.

Harlem's license to operate speed detection devices has been suspended until further notice.

Chief Gary Jones was working to set up the department's annual radar calibration when he discovered the oversight. After meeting with City Manager Jason Rizner aned Mayor Bobby Culpepper, it was decided that the proper course of action was to issue refunds for all speeding tickets that have been issued by the Harlem Police Department since the license expired.

Mayor Culpepper apologized for the oversight, saying, "We are all committed to making this right , and I know Chief Jones is working hard to ensure that all affected individuals are refunded fine amounts and that each driver's history is cleared of the charges."

Chief Jones is working with the Georgia Department of Public Safety to resolve the issue. The city's radar devices were properly calibrated on December 19th, but until officers are re-trained on their use and a new license is issued by the state, the city of Harlem will not be able to use their radar.

Jones said, "Although this happened under a previous police administration, I accept responsibility. I felt that the only ethical and honest response was to notify the public rather than allowing the matter to go forward undetected."

Approximately 85 speeding tickets were issued in the ten months since the city's license expired. Anyone affected by the refund will receive a certified letter after the holidays informing them how their fine will be repaid. Anyone who thinks that they may be affected may also call the Police Department immediately at 706-556-6262.
