WJBF News Channel 6 has learned, contrary to reports from other CSRA media outlets, Columbia County Tax Commissioner Kay Allen is not resigning amid an audit of her office.
Columbia County Commissioners called for that audit earlier this week after questions were raised about the way the office handled the tax digest and collections for smaller communities in the county, Harlem and Grovetown.
We are told the investigation by the Columbia County Sheriff's Office is complete and has been handed over the District Attorney's office.
Leaders in both Grovetown and Harlem explained that payments they made for those services were believed to have gone to the county.
Under an amended law, counties with more that 50,000 parcels can't authorize their tax administrator alone to perform those services on a contractual basis. Columbia County passed the 50,000 parcel level in 2009.
Investigators are looking into whether the funds for those tax collections were paid directly to Allen, which was legal prior to the change in law, in the years following the amended statute.
