***UPDATED at 6:04 P.M. on Tuesday, December 17th***

For some Augusta Commissioners, it was the logical step: if your City Administrator is on the way out, Deputy Administrator Tameka Allen fills in.

"She's there, she's the deputy Administrator as well as IT director. If anybody is equipped to understand what's happening she is," says Mayor Pro-Tem Corey Johnson.

She's done an outstanding job as IT director and a deputy Administrator, and I don't see no reason why she couldn't step up," says Commissioner Bill Lockett.

But, some Commissioners favored another person to take over in the interim...someone they say with a stronger handle on city issues...

"I'm not sure she's up to speed on the TADS, the URA, the SPLOST, the T-SPLOST that's coming, collections, and working...all that I'm not sure," says Commissioner Joe Jackson.

City leaders went behind closed doors for more than an hour to discuss the interim position.

The verdict?

Allen stay as Deputy Administrator, and if Fred Russell is out and she's not available to sign documents or other official action, then Mayor Deke Copenhaver or Mayor Pro-Tem Corey Johnson will serve as the interim, until a permanent interim Administrator is named.

However, Russell remains on only through the rest of this month, and Commissioners don't meet again until the second week of January, so this is expected to be the arrangement after Russell is gone.

"We, at least, have any kind of backup plan, we need in case December 31st comes and we have not named an interim administrator," says Commissioner Mary Davis.

"If that is the will of the Commission today, that's the will of the Commission, that is how we will proceed, and I respect that decision," says Allen.

And, if and when the Commissioners make a decision on the interim Administrator, the Mayor and the Mayor Pro-Tem will be called upon to wear two hats.

The vote was 9-1, with Commissioner Marion Williams abstaining.
