14 added to Masters field through world ranking

Posted: Updated:
Augusta National has added 14 players to the field for the Masters after the final world ranking of the year was published.

That brings the field to 90 players who are expected to compete April 10-13, and again raises the possibility of the Masters exceeding 100 players for the first time in nearly 50 years. Augusta National has the smallest field of the four majors and prefers to keep it under 100 to enhance the overall experience at its tournament.

This is the third time in the last four years that the field was at least 90 players going into a new calendar year. There were 99 players for the 2011 Masters, the most since 103 players competed in 1966.

According to espn.com, the following players qualified under the top 50 invitation ruleJapan's Hideki Matsuyama (23rd), Denmark's Thomas Bjorn (24), Wales' Jamie Donaldson (26), France's Victor Dubuisson (32), Spain's Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (35), Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez (37), Italy's Francesco Molinari (38), the United States' Rickie Fowler (40th), Italy's Matteo Manassero (43), England's David Lynn (45), Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee (46), Sweden's Peter Hanson (48), the Netherlands' Joost Luiten (49) and Branden Grace (50).
