ATLANTA (AP) - Thomas Wilson and Joshua Thomas each had two touchdown runs as Buford stormed back from a 13-point deficit to defeat Washington County 35-19 for the Georgia Class AAA state championship Friday night at the Georgia Dome.
It was the sixth title in seven years and 10th overall for Buford (15-0), which set a state record for points in a season with 707 - 47.1 per game.
Wilson, who finished with 118 yards on 14 carries, had a 21-yard touchdown run to put Buford ahead early the third quarter. He also scored from 35 yards out with eight minutes left.
Thomas had a 16-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter and a 5-yard touchdown with less than two minutes remaining that clinched it for the Wolves. Thomas ran 14 times for 94 yards.
Washington County (14-1) closed to within 28-19 on a 64-yard touchdown pass from A.J. Gray to D. J. Sanders. Gray completed 16 of 30 passes for 231 yards, but was sacked four times.
Sanders also scored when he got behind the Buford defense for a 41-yard TD catch on the first play of the second quarter.
After Sanders' first score, Melvin Hill gave Washington County a 13-0 lead when he returned a punt 86 yards after getting a second chance thanks to a Buford penalty.
The extra point was blocked, though, and Buford closed to 13-7 at halftime when Isaac Nauta caught a 43-yard touchdown pass from Taylor Mitchell with 13 seconds left.
The Buford defense, led by linebacker Korie Rogers, held Washington County to 42 yards rushing.
It was a record seventh consecutive state championship game for Buford, which won the Class AAA title last year and four straight Class AA championships from 2007-2010.
Buford broke the previous state record for points in a season set by Dublin with 682 in 2006. The Wolves' first real challenge of the season was in the semifinals, when they defeated Callaway 24-14 after trailing 14-7 at halftime. No previous team had come within 24 points.
Buford finished with 395 yards total offense to 273 for Washington County
