Preventing Burglaries And Thefts Over The Holiday

Posted: Updated:

30 home burglaries in one area of Augusta have deputies going door to door sounding the alarm on the importance of arming your homes to fight off would be thieves.

SGT Shane McDaniel of the Richmond County Sheriff's Office explains, "If you have an alarm activate it. If you're going out of town contact the Sheriff's Department so we can put our guys in motion. If you have a dog that's in the backyard great. Become familiar with your environment. Become familiar with your neighbors."

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office is taking steps to inform residents of the importance of guarding their home and possessions especially during the holidays.  They say buying a home alarm is a small price to pay for safety and security. "I would really rather pay 25 or 35 dollars a month for alarm activation and save my property," says Sgt. McDaniel.

One of the best defenses when it comes to saving your property is being on the offense when it comes to keying into social media. Announcing your vacation, or posting pictures while away, is like placing a welcome mat for burglars outside your door. "That right there is a huge no-no. That's how a lot of victims become victimized because they are literally advertising their residence as being vacant," adds Sgt. McDaniel.

Another no-no is posting pictures of your beautiful home. You may be anxious for everyone see your prized possession, but, would-be thieves are anxious to take it. Showing your home and its valuables provide a tasty palate upon which burglars can feast.  Sgt. McDaniel says, "to a would be burglar it's like a menu and they're looking at appetizers. They're looking at the entrees and then they are looking at the desserts. You don't want a would be burglar coming by and feeding off your home."

If you are going to be out of town for any amount of time, contact the Sheriff's Office about getting deputies to watch out for your home. When it comes to social media, remember thieves are smart and can tap into just about anything.  Posting those selfies, and pictures of yourself proudly posing, could result in stalking.  So, be extra careful what you post online.
