Aquinas Wins First State Football Championship

ATLANTA (AP) - The greatest season in Aquinas football history ended with their first ever championship. Aquinas finished off their amazing unbeaten run with a 27-7 win over Calvary Day in the GHSA 1-A (Private) championship game Friday afternoon at the Georgia Dome.

Sophomore quarterback Liam Welch threw two touchdown passes to Daniel "Taz" Lindsay, and junior running back Ruben Garnett rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.

Welch completed 9 of 12 passes for 132 yards, and Ruben Garnett rushed for 111 yards in 19 carries, scoring on a 37-yard run.

Robert Heyward scored Calvary Day's touchdown on a 16-yard run and finished with 154 yards on 27 carries.

Calvary Day scored the first touchdown of the game, but Aquinas scored 27 unanswered. 26-year-old James Leonard wins a state championship in his first year as head coach.
