Columbia County Taking Different Approach To Land A Hospital

Posted: Updated:
Columbia County, GA -

Columbia County remains the state's largest county without a hospital or emergency facility.

Even though the State of Georgia killed plans in the past for a hospital in the county, there may now be another way to make it happen.

Columbia County Commission Chairman Ron Cross says there are exceptions within the Certificate of Need, which could help the county get a hospital.

The exceptions are: if the facility is a teaching hospital, or if the county pays for a minimum of 20 percent of the cost.

Cross says the county is hoping to partner with one of three Augusta hospitals, including Georgia Regents Medical Center, University Hospital, and Doctors Hospital.

Proposals have been submitted for evaluation, and Cross says the county should have the proposals back by January 10th. From there, the county will evaluate the proposals and decide which hospital they will go with.

Cross says there is no exact time frame for the approval of a proposal, but this is the first time these exceptions have been they may have a fighting chance.
