Unbeaten WACO faces huge test in title game

Posted: Updated:
Sandersville, GA (WJBF) -- It's a battle of powerhouses Friday in the GHSA 3-A State Championship Game. Unbeaten WACO faces undefeated Buford. As impressive as the Golden Hawks' resume has been this year and in past years (3 state championships), it's no match for what Buford has done. The Wolves are making their 7th straight appearance in the state final, and they've won it all in 5 of the last 6 years. They've won 9 state championships overall.

WACO is playing for its first state championship since 1997. Despite the disparity in recent state title success, Washington County head coach Joel Ingram doesn't consider this a case of David vs Goliath. He says he has a confident bunch that's going to try to treat this like any other game. In fact, they won't leave for the Georgia Dome in Atlanta until Friday morning, and they'll "pull off and eat a sack lunch" like they always do.

WACO features a number of the best players in the CSRA including junior quarterback A.J. Gray, running back Melvin Gordon, and linebacker Logan Hunt. Buford has a number of players drawing interest from top level colleges including senior linebacker Korie Rogers who has committed to Clemson.

Friday's game is a 5:30 kick-off at the Georgia Dome. We'll have full coverage of that game and Aquinas' title game at 2:30 Friday night on WJBF at 11 and on wjbf.com.
