Augusta, GA (WJBF) -- The Aquinas Fighting Irish are playing for the first football championship in school history, thanks to a great final drive that was capped by a great touchdown with less than 30 seconds to play.
Aquinas rallied to beat Mount Pisgah 17-16 Friday night. They trailed 16-10 with just over 5 and a half minutes to play. They marched down the field, converting 2 4th downs along the way. Eventually, they faced a 3rd down from the 5 yard line with :26 left. Coach James Leonard says he called 2 plays because they had no time outs left. They only needed one. Sophomore quarterback Liam Welch found senior John Morris for the touchdown. Justin Thompson added the extra point (no easy task in the pouring rain). The Fighting Irish are now headed to the Georgia Dome.
They will face Calvary Day in the 1A (Private) title game Friday at 2:30.
