'Parent Portal' gives parents instant access to child's grades, attendance

Posted: Updated:
A new online tool launches today for parents in Pitt County. It allows them to instantly check their child's grades, assignments, attendance and more with the click of a button.

It's called Parent Portal and it's part of the North Carolina Public School's Home Base system, which is a state-wide initiative that digitally connects parents, students and teachers to track a child's progress in school. Some school systems like Lenoir County launched the program earlier this year and already have more than 4,400 parents sign up.

"Parents have an opportunity here to go online, look at what's happening in the classroom, and they can pinpoint, 'Oh my child must be having trouble with these assignments, so let me call the teacher and find out what I can do to assist,'" says Karen Klaich, a Pitt County English teacher.

Parent Portal also lets parents see school schedules, announcements and lunch money balances. All the features are available on a computer or through a Smartphone application.

Parents can use a single log-in to keep up with multiple children at one time. Access to the parent portal is currently available for students of all grade levels, but it is most beneficial to students in grades 3-12, says Brock Letchworth, the public information officer for Pitt County Schools.

"We're not doing away with progress reports, we're not doing away with report cards and we're not preventing you from still calling your child's teacher and setting up a conference with them," Letchworth says. "There are still opportunities there to know what's going on in the classroom with your kid. This is just another tool for parents to use in order to be more involved in their child's education."
