Young Burn Patients Shop With A Doc For Toys

Evans, GA -

Some young patients from the Joseph M. Still Burn Center got the red carpet treatment on Tuesday night. The kids got to "Shop with a Doc" at the Target in Evans for whatever they wanted. It's an event that the children look forward to every year.

The kids rolled up to Target in limousines.

"We see them in the clinic and they see us there. This allows us to see them in another environment and for them to see what they can do," JMS Medical Director Dr. Fred Mullins said.

Santa greeted the children as they entered the store and you could see the joy on their faces. Every year, Doctor Fred Mullins and several other doctors give back to the kids by providing them with a $100 shopping spree at Target. The kids get to buy whatever they want for Christmas.

One of those kids is two year old Lucas Powell... his mother says he burned his left arm very badly when he touched a stove.

"It was real quick. Parents, be careful, watch your children very carefully," his mother Hilliary said.

But Lucas forgot about the pain for a little while as he picked out the toys he wanted the most.

"It means a lot. Especially for what he has been through with his arm and his hand. That's a traumatic experience to go through and for him to come here and be able to shop and get some toys, and you know, it's very exciting for him," his mother said.

Thanks to sponsors, donations, and the doctors, kids like Lucas can have the Christmas they wanted this year.

"Oh, yeah, he's excited. I mean, you can see he is ready to go. He said he's ready to work it," Hilliary said.

This was the 8th year for the event.
