Kushner named chair of Wake Co. schools

Posted: Updated:
CARY, N.C. -

Christine Kushner was elected chair of the Wake County school board Tuesday, ending the tenure as chair of Keith Sutton and continuing the monumental changes that have marked the ruling body of Wake County schools.

Kushner won by a 7-2 vote in the first meeting of the new board, which is now dominated by Democrats.

"It's not about one person, and I don't see it that way. And I think it was a lot of discussion about leadership," Kushner said. "I've talked to Mr. Sutton about leadership in the last weeks and he did discuss things and I think we're moving forward."

Kushner represents District 6, which is in central Raleigh. The district includes Broughton High School and extends north into the Sanderson district, and also west toward Brentwood and Capital Boulevard.

When asked about being replaced, Sutton said he wanted to keep his position as chair but hoped he made the community proud with his work.

Kushner takes over as Wake is in its first year with Jim Merrill as superintendent. Merrill, a former Wake schools employee who attended the University of North Carolina, was hired after the previous board, with a 5-4 Democratic majority, fired Superintendent Tony Tata.

Kushner will lead a board that is solidly Democratic, although officially nonpartisan.

The board has significant new faces. Bill Fletcher, Zora Felton and Monika Johnson-Hostetler join the board, and Tom Benton is now in a full term after joining the board in February.

No longer on the board are former board leaders like John Tedesco and Debra Goldman.
