One Week Later: Crystal Coast tornado clean-up continues

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. - Tuesday marks one week since a tornado hit the Crystal Coast.

9 On Your Side checked in with the American Red Cross on the progress.

They say 18 out of 22 tornado victims in Carteret County are still looking for a permanent home.

Robert Allsbrook, the property manager at the hard-hit Ocean Sands Condominiums, says 72 of the 108 units there were destroyed in the tornado. Most of them were empty at the time the EF-2 twister came through.

But, Mel Hoard was trapped in a second story condo.

"I'm rattled. Right now, I'm like a, I think I've still got adrenaline pumping through my system. You calm down for a while, then you start thinking about it and it hits you again. It's not like nightmares. I just think, I mean, I'm just glad I'm here, you know," said Mel Hoard, tornado victim.

Officials at Carteret General Hospital say about 80 vehicles were damaged in the storm. The hospital also lost power for 24 hours and had to use a generator.
