RALEIGH, N.C. -

More than 130 million Americans are expected to go online today to shop for Christmas presents, and many local businesses are sending a clear message that they are also offering deals.

Today is Cyber Monday, the first Monday following Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Small Business Saturday. Many online retailers are offering limited-time sales to encourage consumer to shop on their websites.

A number of local businesses say sites like Amazon, Wal-Mart and Target aren't the only ones offering those so-called Cyber Monday deals.

At Raleigh Workshop in downtown Raleigh, where each pair of jeans is autographed by the jeansmiths who sewed them, everything on the company's website is 20 percent off.

"We make the jeans by hand here in downtown Raleigh," said owner Victor Lytvinenko, who said the Cyber Monday deals has helped increase sales by 200 percent. "So far it's been pretty good. I hope it continues."

Just one of the many local businesses hoping to cash in and compete for big holiday sales, Raleigh Workshop launched its website just in time for the holidays.

Humans aren't the only ones who benefit from holiday shopping. Americans spend about $5 billion on Christmas gifts for their pets, according to the Pet Owners Association.

And Durham-based ThunderShirt is hoping to appeal to pet lovers looking for sales online.

"We are doing 25 percent off store-wide -- that includes the ThunderShirt, ThunderLeash and ThunderToy," said CEO Phil Blizzard.

The ThunderShirt, Blizzard explained, is a practical gift for the dog or cat with anxiety issues.

"ThunderShirt applies gentle constant pressure around the torso of a dog," Blizzard said. "It's that pressure that has a great calming effect on most dogs. It's like swaddling an infant."

Research firm ComScore predicts that Americans will spend $2 billion on Cyber Monday. FedEx expects today to be its busiest it has ever had.
