Staying Fit During the Holidays

Augusta, GA -

We all know weight gain is nearly impossible to avoid during the holiday season, but fitness experts say if you plan ahead for the extra calorie intake, you won't get into too much trouble.

A nibble here, a gobble there, packing on the extra pounds is easy to do during all the festivities this time of year.

With all the traveling and holiday parties, making time for the gym is usually not the first priority.

Some locals decided to stick with their fitness goals, even during the hardest part of the year.

Carla Morgan-Gibbs said she sometimes works out twice a day during the holidays to make sure she doesn't gain any extra weight.

"Exercise has always been the way for me to get the pounds off because I like to eat too much. I can't give up the food," said Morgan-Gibbs.

Another avid gym goer, Janna Malchow, said the gym helps her maintain a healthy lifestyle, especially during the busy months of November and December.

"It helps with the stress, and the weight control. It's really something I need to do every day," said Malchow.

Training experts say you should plan to hit the gym at least 3 times a week, and do high intensity work outs combining cardio and weight lifting to drop those pounds.

Oxygen Fitness Studio owner Amy Iannacone said if you carve out at least 30 minutes a day to break a sweat, you won't have to worry about putting on the pounds.

"With the toning and the high intensity training workouts, you're going to burn it for the rest of the day, so that's why it's so important to combine your workouts, not just do cardio, but combine it with the strength training and the high intensity workouts," said Iannacone.

Of course, lots of water and resisting the temptation for an extra slice of pie will help you fight the bulge during the next couple months.

People who aren't proactive about staying fit should expect to gain between one to two pounds during the holiday season.
