Thanksgiving Eve Is One Of The Busiest Nights For Drinking

Augusta, GA -

When you Google "busiest drinking night of the year," the first five results claim Thanksgiving Eve has that title. For many, the night before Thanksgiving is a great opportunity to meet friends and family for a good time, but it also means there will be drunk drivers on the roads.

At Somewhere in Augusta, all hands are on deck to keep up with customers.

"One of the busiest Wednesday's we have in a while is this Wednesday. We are fully booked up for comedy night. We have someone coming in from Tennessee. So a lot of people are bringing their family out who are in town and showing them something they don't get to see where they are from, maybe," Somewhere in Augusta Assistant Manager Adam Cochran said.

Some bar owners say Thanksgiving Eve is busier than New Year's Eve because there are so many people in town this week.

"I guess, either, getting ready to hang out with their in laws or bringing their in laws out, I mean, it could be either or. Some people could be already tired of them. Some people could be ready to hang out with them and bring them out to show them a good time," Cochran said.

And for those who don't want to deal with the crowds at local bars, you can always pick up your beverage of choice at the liquor store. Bill Prince says Thanksgiving Eve is always a big day for business.

"They are just looking for something to let their hair down. Just something to maybe relax and to get the family together, maybe some relatives together who they haven't seen all year," Prince said.

But for some people, the night before Thanksgiving Eve is called "Blackout Wednesday." It's an opportunity to binge drink because they don't have to work on Thanksgiving Day.

If you go out and have too much to drink, you can call AAA's Tow-2-Go service. A tow truck will take you and your vehicle home for free.

And even though Thanksgiving Eve is a busy night for drinking, Lt. Ramone Lamkin says there wasn't an increase in DUI's this time last year.

"People may drink more, but we found typically it's more at home as opposed to being out in the public drinking and driving," Lamkin said.

Triple A's Tow-2-Go service is free for everyone. All you have to do is call 855-2-TOW-2-GO to get a confidential ride home.
